Day 53 — Farm camping near Luxulyan to a luxury boutique hotel in Charlestown

by | Aug 13, 2024 | 0 comments

At just over 10 miles this was my shortest ride to date, riding up and down (mostly down) from “camping field” near Luxulyan to the wonderfully refurbed Pierhouse hotel in the wow harbour of Charlestown.

My boutique bedroom overlooks the 18th Century harbour that is so reeking of period it has been used in numerous films and TV productions including, of course, BBC’s Poldark (the later one, not the 1970s version).

I’m staying courtesy of St Austell brewery which owns a bunch of gorgeous West Country hotels. Their ownership of pubs and hotels started with the founder, Walter Hicks, who started the booze business in a small way in 1851.

I know that because I went on the brewery tour at the company’s HQ in St Austell. The firm is still run by a relation of Hicks and all members of the extended family have shares in the business (they can’t sell the shares to anybody else but family members).

During the tour I missed today’s wet weather and the ride back down to Charlestown was dry.

I’d already jetwashed the bike just in case I could keep it in the (lovely) room and it’s here with me enjoying the view.

Great weather is forecast for tomorrow and I plan to be out at 5.30am taking pix on the 25-mile ride I curated some time ago.

Earlier this morning, dodging the kids jumping from the pier walls, I showed the route to the harbour’s coffee cabin guys and they suggested some scenic extensions, which I will add to the route.
